Monday Muse: Edie Sedgwick

“Have you ever analyzed things to the degree where you can’t really remember the difference between what’s real and what you’ve created in your head?”

“I’m in love with everyone I’ve ever met in one way or another. I’m just a crazy, unhinged disaster of a human being.”

“You have to put up with the risk of being misunderstood if you are going to try to communicate.”

“Somebody told me that I changed so much each time they saw me that they didn’t recognize me. I don’t believe that, do you think that’s true?”

“I’d like to turn the whole world on just for a moment. Just for a moment”

Edie Sedgwick- heiress, fashion model, muse, actress and icon. She passed away at the young age of 28. She is remembered as being Andy Warhol’s muse, her roles in his films and the contemporary Factory Girl.

Warhol himself said he had never met anyone with more problems than Sedgwick.

Edie Sedgwick was home-schooled in California- her parents taught her and her siblings superiority, and isolated them. She had an eating disorder by the age of 13. After much family turmoil she was sent to boarding school, and eventually was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Connecticut, and then New York.

Those were just the start of many hospital stays, dating rumors, pregnancy rumors (Bob Dylan, Bob Neuwirth) and eventually a death labeled as undetermined/ accident/ suicide.

She shocked in her leotards and short hair, and had a style that mixed uptown pedigree and downtown art.

Let us acknowledge her struggle, admire her perseverance and fierceness to live and appreciate her personal style.

“That was the first time I had a shot in each arm,” she said. “A shot of cocaine and speed, and a shot of heroin. Stripped off all my clothes, leapt downstairs, and ran out on Park Avenue and two blocks down it before my friends caught me. Naked. Naked as a lima bean.”

“[Edie] would be turmoiling over some useless and absolutely nonsensical detail,” Edie’s sister Suky Sedgwick said, according to Jean Stein’s book Edie: American Girl. “I began to realize that Edie had times when she wasn’t totally herself. She couldn’t escape from it either. I knew it wasn’t her fault, but I didn’t know what the hell it was.”

“I think your daughter’s going to be famous,” Warhol remarked to her mother.”And what would be the value of that, Mr. Warhol?” was the cool response. “I had much higher hopes for Edith.”

Two-toned dress c. 1967. “Paraphernalia boutique employed some of the most innovative designers of the 1960s: Betsey Johnson, Deanna Littell & imported from England the designs of Mary Quant, Foale and Tuffin & Paul Blanche. It was the hippest boutique in New York in the 1960s, showcasing new fashions and hosting opening parties that were legend. Betsey became part of the youthquake fashion movement and Andy Warhol’s underground scene, along with Edie Sedgwick “
